Like the double-headed eagle on the Russian national emblem, successive tsars looked to the East and the West at the same time: inheriting the Christian tradition of Constantinople, actively participating in European affairs, and after getting rid of the "Tatar shackles", they continued to expand territory to the east, all the way to the Pacific Ocean. Tsuneyuki Doi, a famous Japanese scholar of Russian history, tried to give an overall description of Russian social history, focusing on the three hundred years of rule of the Romanov family.
