After the gypsy outcast Heathcliff was adopted by Mr. Earnshaw, the owner of Wuthering Heights, he fell in love with his daughter Catherine and resisted the tyranny of his son Hendry. Because of the disparity in social status between Catherine and Heathcliff and her own vanity, she accepted the proposal of Edgar, the owner of Thrushcross Grange. Heathcliff ran away angrily and returned home three years later when he got rich. He found out that Catherine had married Edgar, so he took cruel revenge on the person who took away his love and happiness. He took away Hendry's family wealth through gambling, made his son Hareton a slave, and deliberately married Edgar's sister Isabella to persecute him. Although Heathcliff's revenge was successful, he did not gain happiness from it.
