"American Language 6 (Full English-Chinese Bilingual Translation)" has been widely used as a Chinese language teaching material in American schools from the mid-19th century to the mid-20th century. It is said that more than 10,000 American schools use it as a teaching material. In the 21st century, some private schools and homeschools in the West still use it as a teaching material, which shows the value and influence of this set of books. It is estimated that at least 122 million copies of this set of books were issued from its inception to 1960; after 1961, sales in the West still reached more than 30,000 copies each year. It should be said that no set of textbooks edited by an individual can exceed this circulation! The original English version of this set of readers is divided into seven levels, including the enlightenment readers and levels 1-6. Considering that the Enlightenment Reader and Level 1 are both shorter in length and have similar levels of difficulty, we merged them into Volume 1, and the remaining Levels 2-6 are the same as the original English version. This set of readers published in China includes a total of 6 volumes. Volume 1 starts with the alphabet, focusing on the pronunciation and writing of letters, simple words and sentence patterns, and also emphasizes English writing. There are many calligraphy exercises at the end of the text, so that children can not only speak English like foreigners, but also write like foreign calligraphy. This is a link that is missing in domestic English teaching. Starting from Volume 2, there are more formal texts. Each lesson includes vocabulary and texts, and some new words have English explanations, allowing students to learn to understand new words through simple English and develop the habit of understanding and thinking in English. In volumes 5 and 6, a brief introduction of the author and relevant background knowledge are added before the texts, and the content is rich and in-depth. This set of books is a revised hardcover version based on the original version. The font size of the last two volumes is larger than before, and the original errors have been corrected to facilitate students' reading.
Reader comments
The writing style of this book is easy to understand and is very suitable for us to study. The content in the book is also very interesting, especially the story of the old Duke of Newcastle, which reminded me of those people around me who love to make promises easily. This book can not only learn English, but also understand American culture, which is quite good!
