Published in April 1930, Cityscape was China’s first short-story collection to make extensive use of modernist techniques. It belongs to the New Sensationist school of fiction. The collection grew out of Liu Na’ou’s founding of the magazine The Unrailed Train in September 1928, which brought together young writers intent on experimenting with literary form and offered an early glimpse of the New Sensationist style.
The characters have distinct personalities, such as Ran Qing. His experience on the train reminded me of my own busy life in the city. The descriptions in the book are also very vivid, just like I was sitting on that train, feeling the breeze and the aroma of coffee. I like this kind of work that resonates with me, and I recommend you read it too.
