Synopsis

In August 1923, the first edition of "The Scream" was published by Peking University Xinchaoshe, nearly a hundred years ago. The first edition of "The Scream" was edited and finalized by Mr. Lu Xun, and included 15 stories published by him between 1918 and 1922 (during the 13th printing of "The Scream" in 1930, the author removed "Buzhou Mountain" and later renamed it "Mending the Sky" and included it in "New Stories"). The cover and layout of the book were designed by Mr. Lu Xun himself. It was loved by readers as soon as it was launched and is still an irreplaceable classic version today. In this reprint, we focus on recreating the original appearance of the first edition of "The Scream" for readers. In terms of editing, in addition to converting the traditional vertical layout of the first edition into the simplified horizontal layout, only a few text, punctuation and intellectual errors in the first edition were corrected. A large number of Lu Xun's customary words, phrases and sentence patterns in the first edition have been retained as they are. In terms of binding, a double cover design is adopted, and the inner cover is the restored original first edition cover. Mr. Lu Xun's works remain timeless.

Husserl said that a good skeptic is a bad citizen. This is of course extremely ironic and sometimes biased. Recently I re-read Mr. Da's "The Scream" and "Wandering", especially "Diary of a Madman", "Kong Yiji", and "The True Story of Ah Q". I don't want to emphasize how powerful Mr. Da's command of words is and how profound his connotation is, because countless writers have made extremely incisive, humorous and lovely discussions on this. For example, we are familiar with Mo Yan, Yu Hua, Can Xue, and Xu Zidong. My inner feeling is that although the various phenomena criticized by Mr. Da are marked by the times, they still exist today. The individual is bullied by the group, the indifference of the spectators and the self-confidence of the bully, the inheritance of hatred, the soul of the perpetrator as a slave, the stigmatization of women, misogyny... If there are still people in the contemporary era who can write such short stories, will they still be accepted by the public? After all, some people are now criticizing works such as "Big Breasts and Wide Butts" and "White Deer Plain" as being suspected of slander and not conducive to harmony.

Classics should be read slowly. I personally think the best thing about the anthology is that there are always one or two that you like. You don't have to deliberately like them all. If you find the one you like, read it several times, or even copy it, and you will gain new insights.
