The Spy King: Dai Li and China's Secret Agents

The Spy King studies the secret agents of the Kuomintang's military intelligence service. Drawing on a wealth of memoirs and archival materials, it is a landmark academic work and among the earliest studies of the Republic of China's secret service system by overseas scholars.

Using the life and political career of Dai Li, the "Spy King," as its guiding thread, the book primarily examines the rise and development of his vast, mysterious spy empire.

The author traces the complex relationships among organizations such as the Blue Shirts Society and the Lixing Society during the Whampoa Military Academy era, as well as the rapid expansion of the "Military Statistics System" after the outbreak of the War of Resistance. Drawing on abundant sources, the book also reconstructs the historical details of spy training and operations, exposing this dark and bloody chapter of history. In doing so, it offers a detailed account of the development of the Republic of China's secret service system in the 1930s and 1940s, greatly enriching and deepening our understanding of this period in the country's history.
