Fire and Ice: Li Cunxu, Emperor Zhuangzong of Later Tang

The Five Dynasties period was marked by political turmoil, warlord rule, and endless conflict. Research into the era has been limited by the chaos of the times and the loss of historical records. Grounded in historical fact and structured chronologically, this book tells the story of Li Cunxu, Emperor Zhuangzong of Later Tang, the founding ruler who brought the Later Liang to an end and restored the Tang imperial house. Through his life, it also sketches the history of the entire Five Dynasties period.

The author begins with Zhuangzong's historical context and family origins, then gives a detailed account of his fortunes: from a pampered childhood to inheriting the throne, from ruling Hedong to vying for supremacy in the Central Plains, from resisting the Later Liang to restoring the Tang, and from ascending the throne as emperor to being abandoned by those around him. In his brief life of forty-two years, Li Cunxu faced many dangers, opportunities, and challenges. He overcame, seized, or met most of them, only to fall at the final hurdle.

Set against the backdrop of a turbulent age, Li Cunxu's life unfolds in dramatic rises and falls. The book also illustrates the truth that the realm may be won on horseback, but it cannot be governed from horseback. It helps readers understand this distinctive period of ethnic integration, rule by military men, and the rise of Hebei.
