A group of faceless nobles live in a mansion on a mountaintop. To obtain faces of their own, they create living dolls to serve as their faces. Over time, the oppressive system in Shadow House breeds resentment among some of its residents. Hoping to improve Shadow House's future, a number of exceptional residents band together to enact reforms. But disagreements over their ideas lead to trouble, and the two already-antagonistic factions split completely: the Liberals, backed by Shadow House's upper ranks, and the self-organized Liberationists. After Christopher, leader of the Liberationists, falls, Olivia successfully becomes an adult and earns the upper ranks' favor, ushering in a golden age for the Liberals. Later, Maryrose, carrying on Christopher's will, gathers residents who share her ideals to form a new Liberationist faction and fight against the elite Liberals. A space-time maelstrom transports Shadow House to a new world. How will the Liberals and reformists fare there? And how can Shadow House find peace? (The story runs from Christopher's era to after Kate enters Shadow House. The female lead is purely self-interested and will take over her living doll's body. She only wants to gain more support through reform and rise to a position of power. The new world is Bungo Stray Dogs.)
