[Introduction] This book is a work written by Mark Twain in 1889. It tells the story of the 19th century American Hank Morgan who traveled through time and space and experienced political ups and downs in medieval England.
With knowledge and skills that were 13 centuries ahead of his time, Hank easily ascended to the throne of "Prime Minister" of the Arthurian dynasty in the 6th century, and embarked on various reforms, determined to turn medieval Britain into a democratic and modern country.
Although Hank once created a scene of prosperous industrial civilization, his simple copying behavior that ignored social particularities, misplaced reform concepts, and autocratic rule based on scientific and technological authority laid the foundation for the disillusionment of utopian illusions, and his struggle with the British Church also ended in a massacre.
In the operation of power without restraint and supervision, modern technology has eventually become an accomplice in anti-democratic political events and a tamed tool in the hands of the perpetrators of violent events.
[Editor's recommendation] The bizarre encounter between the modern republic and the medieval monarchy, the absurd conflict between nineteenth-century civilization and the sixth-century church. When power loses restraint and supervision, technology can ultimately become an accomplice against the people.
The origin of time-travel novels and one of the most important works of Mark Twain, the father of American literature.
Reader comments
Those who write about time travel are all leftovers from old Mark's play. Unfortunately, I don't know much about the legend of King Arthur and the situation in the United States at the beginning of the 20th century. There should be a lot of jokes in it, but I really can't catch it.
The person who invented the word time travel is really a genius
This book is very interesting! Mark Twain was really a genius. He combined modern and ancient elements, allowing people to see what impact a person can have on society when he has knowledge that transcends his time. This made me think, if I could travel to the past or future, would I also want to change some things? However, as the book says, we cannot simply apply modern concepts to the past. We must still respect the development of history and society. I think this book is not only an interesting story, but also makes people think about many questions.
