In order to oppose the Qing government's selling of the right to build the Sichuan-Hankou Railway, Xia Zhishi, Lin Shaoquan and others organized the Road Protection Comrades Association, which was brutally suppressed. The road protection movement developed from petitions to armed resistance. The work contains numerous events and numerous characters, reflecting the intricate struggles between various classes, strata and political factions before and after the Revolution of 1911. The author attempts to reproduce the Sichuan Road Protection Movement in 1910 and 1911 and the entire process from the 1911 Revolution to Sichuan's independence in a more grand manner. It can be called a grand epic and encyclopedia of the Sichuan Revolution of 1911. The perspective of the novel's narrative is more "upward", and the narrative is almost conducted between upper-level bureaucrats and historical figures. The most vivid thing in the novel is the shrewd and shrewd wife of Huang Lansheng, a staff member of the Governor's Mansion. The excellent portrayal of the images of Mrs. Huang, Sister-in-law Cai and Sister-in-law Wu shows that Li Jieren is good at shaping Sichuan women with distinctive personalities and fierce temperaments.
