In the late Qing and early Republican period, national hero Huo Yuanjia was killed by the Japanese. His fifth disciple, Chen Zhen, set out to avenge his master, storming the Hongkou Dojo and killing more than thirty Japanese warriors. But Chen Zhen was shot dead at the dojo as well. Huo Yuanjia's wife, Wang Yingyun, was left with their three children: their eldest son, fifteen-year-old Huo Dongting; their second son, eight-year-old Huo Dongjue; and their eleven-year-old daughter, Huo Dongling.
This book tells the story of Huo Dongjue, Huo Yuanjia's youngest son. After his father was killed by the Japanese, eight-year-old Dongjue relied on his mother, brother, and sister. But with the Japanese threatening them and the local government putting them under pressure, they fled Shanghai with the help of senior disciple Liu Zhensheng and his father's friend Nong Jinsun. They planned to seek refuge in Nanyang with Ye Shengling, one of his father's sworn brothers.
The Japanese still refused to let them go and hunted them down relentlessly. In Dongling Town, Liu Zhensheng gave his life protecting Dongjue and his family. Just as they were in grave danger, He Changlin, the Grand Elder of the Qilin Society, rescued them. Dongjue said goodbye to his mother and followed He Changlin to the Society's headquarters to learn martial arts.
He had trained there for two years when a traitor betrayed the Qilin Society, joining forces with the Japanese to destroy it. Dongjue and two other children, Leng Feng and Xia Suiliang, leapt from Qilin Peak and were rescued by their foster father. The three trained under him for ten years. After learning that his mother was in Nanyang, Dongjue bade farewell to his foster father and set out to find her. At last, mother and son were reunited.
