Border Town is one of Shen Congwen's masterpieces. The most detailed and moving description of the ancient city in western Hunan in the high school Chinese textbook comes from this. So I quickly opened the first page of the book, this time quickly enough, and I successfully walked into the small town in western Hunan written by Shen Congwen. That small town was simple and honest, with no roosters, dogs, and thieves to be seen, and no gossip to be heard. Even if you like the same girl, you can honestly compete fairly, realize that you can't compare, and hope that someone better can stay with you. People in the town help each other with everything, whether it's a family that needs matchmaking or a family that unfortunately has an affair. This is a place full of "big love". The grandfather in the book is hard-working, kind and upright, and has stuck to the position of "crossing the river" for his whole life. He only panicked when Cuicui reached the age of marriage. He planned and ran for her, but was misunderstood and rejected. He left Cuicui forever when the "thunderstorm" was about to subside. Overnight, Cuicui lost her grandfather's love and care, lost the ferry boat to make a living, lost the white tower as a spiritual sustenance, and lost the hope of getting married. So suddenly, she was left alone. This person may never come back, maybe he will come back "tomorrow". This classic sentence also leaves infinite fantasy. I think that if the White Tower is rebuilt and the ferry is rebuilt, the two elders will come back, but there will always be Tianbao and Grandpa between him and Cuicui.

Shen Congwen's writing is really delicate, and I especially like his description of the environment. It is really well written, every word seems to take me to a real Chadong. The story actually has an open ending, but it's quite sad for me. I can't control myself to think about the bright side, because it is already full of regrets, but I can also think positively, hoping that Cuicui will be on her own from now on. Cuicui will become brave, guard the boat and cross the river, and become a good person like her grandfather!

The writing is good, the emotions are delicate, and it is endlessly memorable But character seems to be more important. Alas, why can't we have a good character? God is unfair
