I picked names at first, but the more I wrote, the more I felt they weren’t the names I had in mind. So I came up with Jiang Yu’an and Shen Yizhou from the line, “Where is the lonely isle in the river now? I still remember the orchid boat arriving in those days.”

She looked up into his eyes. “Your lips are so sweet. Did you eat candy this morning?”

She raised her hand into the sunlight. The ring she had woven from foxtail grass shimmered in the sun.

“Mr. Song, since I’ve accepted your proposal, I sentence you to loving me for the rest of your life, to make up for all the years you were away.”

In the afternoon, he held her in his arms as they sat in the sun. She narrowed her eyes slightly, cradling a cup of coffee. “What do you think coffee is like?” she asked.

He tapped the tip of her nose. “It’s like our love. It began with affection, and though there’s some bitterness along the way, the lingering sweetness and rich aroma are more than enough for us to cherish it for a lifetime.”
