The story describes the rural life style, customs and sophistication of the Hakka people in northeastern Guangdong in the early 1980s, as well as some social phenomena that existed at that time.
Through the life experiences and different endings of Wu Yinfeng, Sanlang, Wu Xizhen, Wu Gualiu, Wu Cuiping and others, it vividly reflects the oppression and harm of some Hakka women in a patriarchal environment; through the description of Wu Xianfu and Wu Xingcai, it reflects the poison of some Hakka male chauvinism left over from feudal thought and the tragic life endings caused to them.
The full text uses Shan Minshu as the introduction and takes Saburo's growth story as the main line. It describes the character traits of Hakka women, who are as passionate and beautiful as Shanmin flowers; and as mature and stable as Shanmin fruits, who love life, endure hardships and stand hard work, work hard, endure hardships, be unruly and thankless.
