Human civilization in the old era was not destroyed by war or plague, but by the "Day of God's Awakening." A group of huge beings called "Old Gods" awaken from their long slumber. They are not benevolent creators, but predators that feed on human beliefs, emotions and even souls. The world was reduced to ruins, and the remaining humans lingered in the shadow of the gods, or were raised as "livestock" to provide faith, or used as playthings and food.
