This book touches a sore spot. It is difficult for anyone to agree that Europe's economic performance is far from outstanding. Since the completion of this book, I have been fortunate enough to have numerous conversations with people from all walks of life in European civil society, academia, and government, and to discuss the issues raised by this book, some of which took place in open forums. My commentator in Amsterdam is Jeroen Dieselbloom, Dutch Finance Minister and Eurogroup Chairman. The Eurogroup, made up of the finance ministers of the euro area countries, was responsible for designing part of the tough procedures imposed on crisis countries that I refer to in this book. In Davos in January 2017, I participated in a panel discussing the future of Europe, which also included Pierre Moscovici, the European Commissioner responsible for economic and financial affairs, tax, customs, etc. (The equivalent of a US cabinet minister in a sense or other countries). There was a widely circulated telecast of a discussion I had in Vienna with Austrian Chancellor Christian Kern.
