Patterns of Democracy: Forms of Government and Government Performance in 36 Countries: Second Edition

This book examines 36 democracies from 1945 to 2010 and places them within a two-dimensional "conceptual map" of democracy. By comparing the differences between "majoritarian democracy" and "consensus democracy" in 10 dimensions, including party systems, cabinets, and administrative agencies, and relying on strong evidence and in-depth comparative analysis, the author draws an important conclusion: Consensus democracy is more effective than majoritarian democracy in macroeconomic management and violence control and other dimensions that measure democratic quality. The author believes that this finding provides reference for countries that are in the process of democratization and emerging democracies.
