The Verdians are the guardians of the Reed Sea. Underage Verdians have green hair, and children with green hair are not allowed to join the guard. Only when their hair turns brown are they allowed to join the Guardians.
In the spring, Willie looked forward to his hair turning brown and growing up so that he could join the Reed Sea Guards. However, until the fall, he was unable to join the Guards and could not fly.
