This book tells the story of the tortuous fate of Yang Zhenxiu's family after they fled from Sichuan to Pijiagou in northern Shaanxi in the early 1970s. Yang Zhenxiu and his younger brother Zhenhu fled from their hometown to northern Shaanxi with their parents. In order to settle down in Pijia Village and create opportunities for their younger brother to study, Zhenxiu, as the eldest daughter in the family, resolutely shouldered the family responsibilities and married a "idiot". After truly falling in love with the "idiot", Zhenxiu was determined to give birth to a son for him and continue her husband's family. For this reason, she did not hesitate to lead her family to flee Pijiagou again to avoid family planning. The "idiot" died in a mining accident, and she returned to Pijia Village with her children due to a difficult life. She became a widow, and although she was patient and careful, her mother-in-law's rejection and the villagers' prying and insults made her trapped in the whirlpool of life. What shocked her the most was that her son Fu Shengming didn't understand her and eventually left her. She loves her children and her younger brother. She endures the hardship silently, smiles at tomorrow, and sticks to her homeland. This book depicts the historical changes of rural areas in northern Shaanxi over more than fifty years, with rich and broad content. The protagonist Zhenxiu is a typical image of traditional Chinese rural working women, who is tolerant, strong and capable. For the sake of her family, she sacrificed her love and went through hardships. Her character is plump and positive, and her hard spiritual core gives people strength. The language is appropriate and flavorful, just like the crops that grow vigorously in the land in season, and are full of regional color.
