The Supreme One

“Quan, have you heard of the Red Spider Lily?”

“I have. The Red Spider Lily grows in the west, but I don’t like it. They say it represents parting, sorrow, ill fortune, and the beauty of death. It blooms for a thousand years and withers for a thousand years. Its flowers and leaves never meet. Love is beyond cause and effect, while fate is bound to life and death.”

“Really? I never knew that. But it’s so beautiful, and it can grow anywhere. It’s too bare here. Only the Red Spider Lily can grow here. If the entire eight-hundred-mile stretch of the Yellow Springs were covered in Red Spider Lilies, it would be so beautiful, so beautiful.”

“Since you like them, I’ll fill eight hundred miles with a sea of flowers for you. For all eternity, the flowers and I will always be by your side.”
