Hua Shan Talks About the "University of Mean"

"Destiny is called nature, spontaneity is called Tao, and cultivating the Tao is called teaching." The ideas in this book are mainly used to educate "gentlemen". Through self-supervision, education, and thinking, they can improve themselves, improve their self-cultivation, and ultimately cultivate themselves into a kind, sincere and friendly person. This book implements the word "sincerity" from beginning to end. A gentleman should be careful, examine and discern clearly. Cultivation is his own personal matter. He who is loyal to himself, loyal to his friends and kind to his parents, relatives and friends can be called a friendly person.

Classic Chinese literary works are difficult to read, but they are very valuable. "The Great Learning" is said to have been written by Zeng Zi and is known as "the first of the Four Books". The "cultivation of one's moral character, organization of one's family, governance of the country, and peace of the world" that we are familiar with are the contents of "The Great Learning". Zhu Xi, an acting scholar of the Song Dynasty, believed that reading the "Four Books" should start with "The Great Learning". It can be said that if you don't read "The Great Learning", you won't be able to touch the door of Confucianism. The principles in "The Doctrine of the Mean" are so profound that they were called by Zhu Xi "the mind taught by Confucius" and listed as an advanced reading among the "Four Books".

"The way of a university lies in clear virtue, in being close to the people, and in striving for perfection." Self-cultivation means clear virtue, and renewing oneself every day; managing the family means a new family; governing the country means a new person in the country; bringing peace to the world means a new person in the world. This book is written by Hua Shan in the form of lecture notes, citing ancient and modern examples to help us understand the cultural knowledge contained in this Confucian book. The language is easy to understand, the logic is clear, and the examples cited are very relevant. Cultivating one's moral character means being virtuous and renewing oneself every day; managing one's family means one's new family; governing a country means one's new people; bringing peace to the world means one's new whole world.

Treat others how you want them to treat you; treat them how you don't want others to treat you. The relationship between you and people here is not a mutual relationship. It's not that you treat A as you want A to treat you; it's that you treat B as you want A to treat you. So, if you don't want your superiors to treat you like that, don't do that to your subordinates; if you don't want your subordinates to treat you like that, don't do that to your superiors; if you don't want the people in front of you to do anything to you, don't do anything to the people behind you; if you don't want the people behind you to do anything to you, don't do anything to the people in front of you.

This book interprets the "University of Mean" very well. The University of Mean is the essence of Confucianism. The author Hua Shan uses the original text to make accurate judgments and explanations based on the current corporate status, and explains Confucianism straightforwardly and thoroughly. The core idea of ​​the mean is impartiality and the right way. Only by first receiving good education can one have noble moral character, thereby correctly viewing human nature, improving one's own cultivation, broadening one's horizons, and facing everything in the world with the "eyes of a gentleman". Only then can one achieve the mean.
