The Moon and Sixpence

It is undisputed that the British painter in "The Moon and Sixpence" is based on the French post-Impressionist master Paul Gauguin (1848-1903). Gauguin also worked as an agent before he decided to engage in painting; Gauguin's life was also very bumpy and poor; Gauguin finally arrived in Tahiti and was buried on a desolate island. But apart from the broad outlines of life, Maugham created an entirely different character.
