This book is the first academic monograph on English roots published in China. It aims to popularize the knowledge of English roots, provide English learners with shortcuts to overcome English vocabulary difficulties, and provide a golden key to open the treasure house of English vocabulary. The first part systematically discusses the basic theory of English roots; the second part introduces commonly used English roots and related derivatives in detail; the third part briefly introduces the more commonly used roots and their main derivatives. This book was first published by Fujian Education Press in 1984. Not long after it came out, it was rated as "the first in China" by industry experts as "a book that systematically introduces the roots of English words from the perspective of etymology." In 1998, the Chinese University of Hong Kong's "Online Support Project for Biliteracy and Trilingual Education" praised it as "a rare good book on English education published in China." Since the "revised edition" in 2008 was published by our publisher, this book has received continuous and enthusiastic praise from readers. This "new edition" has been devoted to the author's efforts in recent years, and its theoretical and practical aspects have been strengthened. The length of the book is nearly half larger than that of the "revised edition". About the author:
Li Pingwu, professor of English. After graduating from university, he has been engaged in English teaching for more than 40 years. Because of his serious and responsible teaching, he has been awarded the title of "Outstanding Educator of Fujian Province" and "National Outstanding Teacher". Since 1978, he has been engaged in research work on English lexicon, lexicography and bilingual translation. The research focuses on the theory and practice of English word formation based on morphemes. His representative works include two academic monographs, "English Roots and Words Explained" and "English Affixes and English Derivatives", as well as a popular series of readings titled "Scientific Memory Method for English Words". Due to his specialization in long-term academic research, he was dispatched by the Ministry of Education in 1989 as a senior visiting scholar to work at the Dictionary Research Center of Macquarie University in Australia for more than a year. After returning to China, he was promoted to the title of professor in 1992. Since 1993, he has enjoyed the "Special Government Allowance Expert" treatment approved by the State Council.
