In 1931, the Japanese Kwantung Army launched the "September 18th" Incident, and Zhang Xueliang withdrew from Northeast China. In 1935, the Red Army of the Central Committee of the Communist Party of China arrived in northern Shaanxi, and Chiang Kai-shek transferred the Northeast Army into Shaanxi and Gansu. Neither the Northeastern Army led by Zhang Xueliang nor the Seventeenth Route Army led by Yang Hucheng were directly related to Chiang Kai-shek, and they were repeatedly marginalized. On December 12, 1936, in order to persuade Chiang Kai-shek to change the established national policy of "reconciling the internal situation before resisting foreign aggression", stop the civil war, and unite to resist Japan, two generals, Zhang Xueliang and Yang Hucheng, launched a "military remonstrance" and detained Chiang Kai-shek. With the mediation of all parties, the Xi'an Incident was finally resolved peacefully, and the situation was reversed.
