Mozi (National Academy of Chinese Studies)

The legend that Mozi defeated Chu and attacked Song has been circulating for more than two thousand years. He refused the land grant from the King of Chu and left. In his later years, he went to Qi State and tried to dissuade Xiang Ziniu from attacking Lu, but failed. The King of Yue invited Mozi to be an official and promised him a fiefdom of five hundred miles. He took "listen to my words and use my way" as the conditions for his departure, regardless of fiefdom and rank. The purpose was to realize his political ambitions and ideas. Because of this, his wisdom and moral character have won the respect of people of all ages. Mohism advocates universal love and emphasizes loving others as oneself. This idea is conducive to breaking the long-term patriarchal concept based on blood family and is a typical humanitarian thought. Therefore, later generations evaluated Mozi as China's Western philosopher. The Mohists also advocated the spirit of absolute altruism, which inspired people with lofty ideals in the past generations to work diligently for the independence, prosperity and strength of the nation, and became an inexhaustible source of motivation. In today's China, it is also of practical significance to advocate Mozi's spirit of frugality, altruism, and self-suffering. There is a saying in the "Mo Jing": "There is no one in the world, but the words of Zi Mozi still exist." This famous saying, full of philosophy and heroic sentiments, fully demonstrates the Mohist school's firm confidence in its own theory. For thousands of years, Confucianism flourished while Mohism declined. But today, when we re-appreciate the Mohist doctrine and spirit, it will definitely have a positive role in promoting the revitalization of Chinese culture and the development of democracy and science.

"Mozi" contains content in philosophy, logic, natural science and other aspects. It uses a lot of logical inference methods and puts forward the logical concepts of argument, category and reason. The author spent several years studying the original work, and on the premise of retaining the author's thoughts, he annotated and translated the original text to facilitate readers' reading and understanding. Through one historical allusion after another, I got close contact with that period of history and understood the author's thoughts. After reading it, I also had my own views on Mozi's ideas of respecting the virtuous, advocating unity, universal love, non-aggression, economical use, and economical burial.

Mozi, as one of the outstanding thinkers, educators, scientists, and military strategists in ancient my country, is also the founder and main representative of the Mohist school. His representative work "Mozi" reasoned layer by layer and explained the profound things in simple terms, and it has been sought after and studied by future generations. Mohism, together with Confucianism, is called "Xianxue". Its intellectual viewpoint is centered on universal love, with frugality and respect for the virtuous as its fulcrum. It has a complete set of scientific theories based on geometry, physics, and optics, and created the first complete logic system in history. Its status is very transcendent.

This time I carefully read the full text of "Mozi". Mozi's teachings are really valuable. The shortcomings of this book do not lie in the original text, but in the translation. It may be that the translator's level is limited and some obvious errors have not been corrected. I hope there will be a more professional translation version in the future, otherwise everyone will read the content with errors and misinterpret the original meaning of Mozi.
