Late Sunshine and Longing tells the story of Lin Wanqing, who grows stronger and presses on with resilience amid the hardships of marriage and life, all to protect her daughter, Lin Nian, affectionately known as Niannian.
Lin Wanqing was once trapped in a miserable marriage to Gu Jingchen. Faced with her husband’s betrayal and her mother-in-law’s constant torment, she endured and backed down time and again, hoping to give her daughter the appearance of a complete family. Niannian’s birth, and especially the pale red birthmark on her face, became Lin Wanqing’s softest spot and her strongest armor.
When disaster struck the Gu family and the company went bankrupt, the burden of life descended without warning. Gu Jingchen, once pampered and coddled, sank into despair; his sharp-tongued mother put away her claws; and Lin Wanqing abandoned every last shred of dignity, struggling to make ends meet by selling children’s clothes at a street stall. From her initial helpless fragility to the resilience and courage she later found, she gradually transformed through every storm, using her slender shoulders to shelter her daughter.
The story centers on the bond between mother and daughter. It explores the breakdown and rebuilding of a marriage, the hardships and struggles of daily life, the radiance of motherhood, and a woman’s growth. Through setback after setback, Lin Wanqing protects Niannian with love and courage. In her struggle against life, she also finds her own worth and eventually understands that a true home has nothing to do with wealth or appearances. It lies in the warmth of supporting one another and the strength to keep moving forward.
