During the Ming-Qing war, they defeat the Qing dynasty and the Dutch forces that tried to take advantage of the conflict. In peacetime, centralization loosens its grip on imperial power, allowing the emperor to hold power in his own hands. This change continues even after the Chongzhen Emperor Zhu Youjian dies, and the reform-minded Yongli Emperor Zhu Cizhao is chosen as his successor. Meanwhile, the Manchus, holed up in Mongolia, begin a new war with Russia. The Yongli Emperor personally leads his troops into battle while sending expeditionary forces to the West and the Americas, until the North Pacific becomes an inland sea of the Ming, and later of the constitutional monarchy known as the Chinese Empire.
