Spring and Autumn Storms is the first book in the Looking Back Across a Thousand Years series. Drawing a clear narrative thread through a vast body of historical records, it helps readers grasp the course of Spring and Autumn history from a broad perspective.
The main historical thread is divided into four stages.
Early Spring and Autumn period: After King Ping moved the Zhou capital east, the three lesser hegemons of the Spring and Autumn period, led by Duke Zhuang of Zheng, shaped the era's central narrative. Through the perspectives of Zheng, Qi, and Chu, the book recounts the historical events of the early period.
Middle Spring and Autumn period: After Duke Huan of Qi rose to power, the story carries on from the early period and focuses on the rivalry between Qi and Chu, recounting events from Duke Huan's rise to hegemony over the Central Plains to the battle between Qi and Chu in the Jianghuai region.
Late Spring and Autumn period: The book explains the background to the Quwo branch replacing the main line in Jin, and traces the rise of the State of Jin. Centered on Duke Wen of Jin, Chong'er, and his years in exile among the various states, it reconstructs the Battle of Chengpu from political, military, and geopolitical perspectives. From the Battle of Chengpu in 632 BCE to the second Peace Conference at Mi in 546 BCE, the rivalry between Jin and Chu became the defining theme of the age for nearly a century.
Final Spring and Autumn period: After the second Peace Conference at Mi, the states of the Spring and Autumn period enjoyed forty years of peace. As external tensions eased, Jin, Chu, and Qi each faced internal strife to varying degrees. The scholar-official class rose to prominence and gradually usurped the power of the feudal lords. This development had far-reaching effects on later generations, including the partition of Jin by three families and the Tian clan's takeover of Qi. During the same period, Wu and Yue rose in the southeast, bringing their rivalry to its peak. In the end, King Goujian of Yue succeeded in taking his revenge, establishing the balance of power among the four great states of Jin, Chu, Qi, and Yue at the beginning of the Warring States period.
Drawing on historical sources such as the Spring and Autumn Annals, the Zuo Zhuan, the Discourses of the States, the Gongyang Commentary, the Guliang Commentary, the Records of the Grand Historian, the Yuejue Shu, and the Spring and Autumn Annals of Wu and Yue, as well as a wealth of scholarly works, Spring and Autumn Storms combines broad and close-up perspectives to recreate a panoramic picture of the era through political, economic, military, and geopolitical lenses.
In the process of examining the historical records, the author also puts forward new interpretations of many events. For example, the prevailing view is that Duke Zhuang of Lu and Ai Jiang had no children because Ai Jiang was promiscuous and therefore infertile. However, after reviewing the historical sources, I found that Duke Zhuang of Lu and Ai Jiang were closely related by blood, and that their lack of children may have been due to their close-kin marriage.
I think this book is very interesting! It tells the historical stories of the Spring and Autumn Period very clearly, just like watching a wonderful movie. My favorite is Duke Wen of Jin, Chong'er, in the book. His experience in exile in various countries is so legendary. This reminds me of "Historical Records". They are all good books that can help people understand history. Moreover, the author has many new perspectives on historical events, such as the analysis of the reasons why Duke Zhuang of Lu and Ai Jiang had no heirs, which is very novel! I recommend you also read this book, you will definitely gain something!
The stars and rivers are turning, and the sea of history is vast!
The narrative is natural, objective and fair, a rare good book!
