Jiarong of Tibet (Complete in Two Volumes)

During the reign of the Guangxu Emperor in the Qing dynasty, thousands of serfs in the Tibetan areas of Jiarong, Sichuan, led by Dega Muka Burong, rose up in revolt. They overthrew the rule of the local chieftain’s wife, abolished corvee labor, and redistributed land and wealth, dealing a heavy blow to the brutal ruling class. The serfs fought bloody battles against the Qing army, but were ultimately outnumbered and their uprising was crushed. This revolt, known as the “Qiongshan Uprising” or the “Kalong Incident,” was one of the most influential serf uprisings in Tibetan history.

As the first panoramic novel to depict a Tibetan serf uprising, this work lays bare the darkness and backwardness of the serf system in Tibet’s history. It vividly recounts the stirring acts of courage in the struggle against serfdom, presents the distinctive history, culture, and customs of the Jiarong Tibetans in full, and reveals for the first time some little-known secrets from Tibetan history.
