The Great Hall of the People is the place where the National People's Congress and other large gatherings have been held. It is also the place where the party and state leaders of the People's Republic of China and the people hold political and diplomatic activities. It was completed on September 24, 1959. The Great Hall is located on the west side of Tiananmen Square in Beijing, west of the Square West Road and south of West Chang'an Street. Its west and south sides are the Great Hall of the People West Road. It has a construction area of 171,800 square meters. The building plane is in the shape of a "mountain". The exterior is a light yellow granite wall with yellow and green glazed tile eaves. There is a five-meter-high granite base below and 134 circular columns around it. The overall building area is larger than the entire construction area of the Forbidden City, making it the largest synagogue-style building in the world. The Great Hall of the People was opened to the public on July 15, 1979.
