Shanxi is named because it is located to the west of the Taihang Mountains. It is located in the middle of the Yellow River Basin. It has the towering Taihang Mountains as a natural barrier to the east and is adjacent to Hebei. To the west and south, the Yellow River is a natural chasm, facing Shaanxi and Henan. To the north, across the Great Wall, it is adjacent to Inner Mongolia. Therefore, it has been called "mountains and rivers inside and outside" since ancient times. Shanxi has mountains, undulating hills, and ravines. The general terrain is "two mountains sandwiching a river." The east and west sides are mountainous and hilly uplift areas, and the central part is a series of beaded basin subsidence zones, with plains distributed in between. Shanxi has a total area of 156,700 square kilometers, and the mountainous area accounts for more than 80% of the province's total area.
