"On Sea Power", that is, "The Influence of the Sea on History", was published in the United States in 1890 and was the first successful work of Ma Hanhai's theory. The book attracted attention as soon as it was published. The United States, Japan, Germany, the Soviet Union and other countries have successively used it as a guide for formulating national development strategies. China's current severe maritime situation has become the consensus of the Chinese people. If China wants to rise and the Chinese nation wants to achieve great rejuvenation, it must break the shackles of the sea and truly move towards a better and vast world. Controlling the sea has become a problem that the Chinese nation has to face head-on. We hope that the book we have carefully republished will enable every reader to understand the current situation and the heavy pressures China is facing, help China break through the ice and achieve glory, and make you no longer confused about China's future.

Mahan's Theory of Sea Power was a work that found a way out for the United States, but the influence of this book went beyond the United States. If we think about the problem from another angle, China is very similar to the United States a hundred years ago, and it also has the problem of overcapacity. Moreover, we are the biggest beneficiary of global free trade. China has replaced the United States as a staunch advocate and standard-bearer of global free trade. Therefore, the purpose of developing the navy is to allow China to become a new type of power through more active and expansionary global trade. This is the correct posture for China in our generation to open up the Mahanian sea power theory.
Some parts of the text seem to have added the translator's own opinions. I don't know if other parts are completely in accordance with the original text. However, it is obvious that the United States' operations from the old Roosevelt to the present are basically based on the arguments of this book, because Mahan is an American, and the United States has indeed had the conditions to operate according to this book after opening up the two oceans. Now it is also using the first and second island chains to prevent China from blocking China's access to the Pacific Ocean. Look at the British blocking Germany's shipping route to the North Sea in World War I. Didn't the United States just follow the script?
A country's maritime rights are as sacrosanct as its land rights. In recent years, we have discovered flammable ice in the South China Sea, which is a very precious fuel. Marine resources are vital to the country's development. The importance of marine economic development and territorial integrity can be seen from the time when Japan and my country competed for the Diaoyu Islands. This is a book about governing the maritime realm. The importance of sea power is self-evident. Understanding the knowledge about maritime governance helps to understand the current international situation and pressures faced, and promotes the development of our country in all aspects.
The author Alfred Thayer Mahan lived in an era when American capitalism achieved great development and entered the monopoly stage. In 1894, the United States' industrial production ranked first in the world, and at this time the world had been basically divided up by the old colonialist countries. Two major military blocs are forming in Europe, ready to use force to break the original balance. Against this background, public opinion toward establishing a new international order gradually emerged in the United States. The proposal of the "sea power theory" catered to the United States' eager desire and political needs to redefine its sphere of influence, and gave the United States a theoretical basis for overseas expansion. Therefore, it was welcomed by American rulers. Mahan's sea power theory represented the national interests of the United States and became the main theme of public opinion. It had a great influence on many American politicians and diplomats, especially Roosevelt, who first served as Assistant Secretary of the Navy and was later elected as the President of the United States. Therefore, the "sea power theory" is also an important symbol of the turning point in the United States' foreign strategy. During his four consecutive terms as President of the United States, Roosevelt worked tirelessly to build the navy, making the U. S. Navy unprecedentedly powerful. This book was completed at the end of the 19th century. It has certain historical limitations and is obviously based on the national interests of the United States.
Alfred Thayer Mahan, an outstanding American military theorist and the founder of sea power theory. He devoted his life to the research and writing of naval strategic theory and the establishment of American sea power. He advocated using a powerful navy to control the sea, thereby protecting the country's trade and economy and making the country invincible. Mahan explains his understanding of sea power in detail in this book, raising the control of the sea to a high strategic level in the rise and fall of a country. Sea power shares weal and woe with the rise and fall of a country, and maritime interests are crucial to the strength of a country.
This book is known as "the most important book in modern naval history" and is also one of the must-have readings for naval strategy makers around the world. The author uses the theory of sea power to explain the blueprint of the new international order and guide the country in formulating development strategies. The author uses easy-to-understand language to introduce readers to various aspects such as naval history, strategic thinking, and military technology. Through specific case analysis, he introduces readers to what "sea power" is, how to play the role of sea power, and how to maintain and improve one's sea power status. This book has had a profound impact on naval military theory and practice in today's world. Of course, this book also has a strong color of American national interests. Readers should pay attention to reading with discernment when reading.
It has depth, breadth, reason and evidence, and makes people alert!
I spent an afternoon and an evening writing out the 3,000-word reading notes for the military science class [Salute] It was very moving.
