Zhang Ziping (1893-1959), formerly known as Zhang Bingsheng and formerly known as Weimin, was a native of Meixian County, Guangdong. He was one of the most popular writers in my country in the early 1930s. He planned and established the "Creation Society", one of the most important literary societies in the history of modern literature. At the same time, he is a writer with a complicated and controversial history. He once served in the puppet Japanese regime and was a traitor. After the victory of the Anti-Japanese War in 1945, he disappeared from the literary world. Zhang Ziping has written more than forty short stories, and this book contains four of his short stories, which are called "surrounding novels" because of their author's autobiographical nature. These works describe the difficult life of a university professor's family in W City (Wuchang) in the mid-1920s. While reflecting the miserable situation of intellectuals, the work angrily condemned the warlords' melee, and condemned the "revolutionary leaders", "party state dignitaries" and other new rich people's speculative revolution, extravagance, lewdness, despicable and shameless behavior.
Reader comments
It is an excellent piece of street literature. The author observes the details and writes about the family problems of some unsuccessful intellectuals in great detail, similar to Liu Zhenyun's "Chicken Feathers in a Land".
The male protagonists are not noble people. Although they are knowledgeable, they are poor, bitter, stingy, careless, and treacherous. They are all petty and calculating. They are too realistic and almost like a black man.
This book reminds me of the people around me who are struggling for life. The author made me feel how difficult life is by describing the lives of ordinary people in difficult environments. At the same time, the criticism of social reality in the book also made me think deeply. It reminds us to cherish our current life, work hard, and at the same time pay attention to social issues and do our part for others.
