Synopsis

Emperors throughout the dynasties lived under the watchful eyes of countless officials. Their affairs ranged from ascending the throne and shaping the world to summoning concubines and drinking tea while watching a play. Liu Xiu, Emperor Guangwu of Han, was said to be gifted in both letters and arms, as well as broad-minded and magnanimous. He was a skilled military strategist, adept at winning against the odds and securing victory through surprise. After the Western Han fell, society descended into turmoil and the people suffered. Liu Xiu seized the opportunity to raise an army, defeating Wang Mang's main forces and winning widespread fame. After founding the Eastern Han dynasty, he set about reforming the bureaucracy, while placing various restrictions on the power of the feudal princes and the imperial in-laws. Near the end of his reign, he even “proclaimed prophetic texts throughout the realm,” hoping to use a blend of Confucian doctrine and prophetic mysticism as an ideological weapon to strengthen his control over the people's thinking. This book offers a detailed account of Liu Xiu's life, giving readers a glimpse of objective historical facts from a distant era and unfurling a sweeping, legendary panorama of history.
