The Special Forces Unit Buried by Chiang Kai-shek

Among the millions of soldiers in the Kuomintang army was a special group known as “the Kuomintang's whistling-arrow unit” and “the Kuomintang's thunderbolt god of war.”

They were a formidable group, equipped with the finest gear, rigorously trained, and fearless in battle. Once their blades were drawn, they swept through their foes like a storm.

They were a mysterious group. From recruitment and training to operations and withdrawal, they moved like ghosts, remaining an enigma to the outside world.

They were a ruthless group. Whether facing enemies on the battlefield, traitors, national heroes, or patriots, they did not hesitate to bare their blades.

In battle, whether fighting directly, carrying out raids and encirclement operations, supporting the main force with rescue, flanking, and transport missions, or conducting reconnaissance and assassinations behind enemy lines, they were always quick to react, highly skilled, and unpredictable in their tactics. They often played a decisive role at critical moments, becoming a “magic sword” that helped the Kuomintang army defeat its enemies.

This group was the Kuomintang's special forces. They had once inflicted heavy losses on domestic warlords and struck fear into their hearts; they had dealt devastating blows to the Japanese invaders and made them wary; and they had also caused some damage to the heroic People's Liberation Army, drawing its attention.

Of course, the special forces achieved such success not because they were superhuman, savage, or bloodthirsty. It was because the Kuomintang had poured vast quantities of gold and foreign currency into them. They were handpicked from among millions of Kuomintang troops and equipped with advanced German and American weapons. They were rigorously trained by Nazi and U.S. military instructors. In short, the Kuomintang had high hopes for its special forces and gave them enormous support, making them the army's “chosen ones.”

However, the special forces were never the main strength of the Kuomintang army. They could influence and bolster the overall war effort, but they could not change its course. Chiang Kai-shek's dictatorial policies had alienated the people, and the People's Liberation Army was advancing like a force of nature. Under the onslaught, this dazzling flower of war began to fade, and was ultimately defeated and disbanded, or fled in disarray to the isolated island of Taiwan.
