On a rainy night in 1999, seven-year-old Jiang Keqi attends her mother's funeral. A mysterious woman trades her life for that of a girl using an ancient bronze mirror, but the ritual is interrupted by a malicious locust tree spirit. In the mirror appears Lin Wanqiu, a girl whose fate is bound to hers.
Eighteen years later, while working at an antiques shop, Jiang Keqi keeps glimpsing red-clad apparitions on the surfaces of bronze objects. After revealing her incomplete Seven Stars Around the Moon fate while dealing with a ghost marriage, she is taken in as a disciple by the fate-reader Xuan Qingzi and drawn into the swirling world of yin and yang.
A blood-black locust tree in Locust Tree Village conceals a hairpin engraved with a birth date. The ledgers of the midnight ghost market reveal that she was marked long ago as a vessel for another's fate. In the mirror world, she meets Lin Wanqiu, whose neck bears a familiar birthmark. As fragments of memory peel back the truth behind the fate-swapping, it emerges that the Lin family exchanged their fates to suppress the thousand-year-old tree spirit inside their daughter. Meanwhile, a newspaper clipping about a fire hidden in Xuan Qingzi's study reveals that the guardian of fates had coveted her baleful fate for thirty years.
When Lin Wanqiu willingly returns her fate during the final battle, Xuan Qingzi instead refines the twins' fates into bait. Jiang Keqi uses the unfinished fate-swapping ritual from years ago to turn the tide, sealing the tree spirit's source in a reversed compass. But then she discovers that the seven red marks on her wrist have connected her to the world of yin and yang.
At last, a warning whisper comes from the bronze mirror, spoken by Lin Wanqiu. And in the antiques shop, while rain pours outside, the newly acquired Warring States bronze mirror reflects a double image taking root deep within Jiang Keqi's eyes.
