Everyone says the Mao family rules the south and the Ma family the north. But these days, there are few Ma family spirit mediums left in the northeast. The people most of us are likely to encounter are the spirit mediums who serve the immortals of Northeast China. As for me, I was destined to become one of them even before I was born. Everything I’ve been through should be the sort of thing that happens all around us, yet most people will never experience it in their entire lives. Sometimes, when I think back on those strange and bizarre events, they feel like a dream, yet also like something that truly happened. Sometimes even I’m not sure whether they were real.
