This reminds me of "The Tale of Genji". Many scenes in it have this "mysterious" beauty. Moreover, I think this aesthetic of shadows and gloom is also similar to some of our Chinese classical aesthetics. For example, some stories in "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio" also have that mysterious and distant atmosphere.
