This book is an accessible introduction to Song dynasty history, recounting events that took place in China during the first year of the Jingde era under Emperor Zhenzong of Song (1004 CE).
In the first month of 1004, an earthquake struck the Song dynasty, officially ushering in a turbulent year. Soon afterward, Li Jiqian, leader of the Tangut, was ambushed by Pan Luozhi; Song chancellor Li Hang died; Bi Shian and Kou Zhun became chancellors at the same time; and Empress Dowager Xiao of the Liao led an army of 300,000 south, reigniting hostilities along the Song-Liao border. One strange and twisting tale after another unfolded, and a cast of vivid, distinctive figures stepped onto the stage of history. When the nation was in peril, they each did their duty and repelled the Liao invasion. In the end, the Chanyuan Treaty brought the war between Song and Liao to a close.
Though the Chanyuan Treaty has long been controversial, it laid the groundwork for the era of good governance under Emperor Renzong of Song and established more than a century of peace between Song and Liao.
Through this book, readers can learn about the fierce political, military, and diplomatic struggles between Song and Liao in 1004, and see how the rulers of both states made decisions amid one crisis after another, shaping the course of their relations.
The first year of Jingde was really an extraordinary year, with many things happening. I especially like the vivid and unique characters in the book. Their performance at the critical moment of the country is really admirable. This reminds me of some characters in "Water Margin", who also showed their bravery and wisdom in troubled times. However, I kind of hate Empress Dowager Xiao of the Liao Kingdom. I feel like she is very scheming. Overall, this book is well worth reading and it gave me a deeper understanding of the history of the Song Dynasty.
Fascinating, great book
