Synopsis

"Mental Illness and Psychology" is a book that Foucault rejected, but it shows extraordinary academic and documentary value today. In the early 1950s, Michel Foucault conducted systematic and in-depth studies of psychology and psychiatry. He obtained diplomas in psychopathology and experimental psychology in 1952 and 1953 respectively. During this period, he listened to the courses of the French psychoanalytic master Jacques Lacan. In 1954, Foucault published his first monograph, "Maladie mentale et Personnalité" (Maladie mentale et Personnalité). However, he was later dissatisfied with the work and considered it immature. Therefore, he made extensive revisions when it was republished in 1962, and the title of the book was changed to "Mental Illness and Psychology". Foucault emphasized in this book that "psychology became possible only after madness was controlled" and discussed the history of madness within social and cultural structures. Through his analysis of the particularities of mental illness, his study of specific forms of psychology, and his definition of the state of madness, he echoes two major aspects of the book: the psychological category of mental illness and the dialectical relationship between madness and culture. The book is like the man. Foucault's extensive revisions to the original 1954 edition when the book was republished in 1962 are strikingly consistent with several life decisions he made during the same period. After quitting the party, resigning, and going abroad, Foucault was looking for a new path in life and at the same time opening up a new realm of thought. The reprinted work also moved from the original traditional side-by-side arrangement to an "escape" pattern. The combination of history and culture tells different perspectives, different thinking, different ideas, respectively telling about madness, freedom and civilization. Some of Blondel's views I don't agree with compared to Foucault's views.

This book is very interesting! Foucault put the history of madness into social and cultural structures and gave me a new understanding of mental illness. And I think he is right, psychology is indeed possible only after madness is controlled. However, I don't really like Blondel as a character, and I can't quite accept his point of view. Overall, this book was very inspiring to me. It allowed me to see the beginning of Foucault's thought, and also made me more interested in his subsequent works.

When mental illness itself is inevitably regarded as heterogeneous and exclusive, it is fortunate that researchers treat such special groups with the world's respect for individuals. Foucault used his in-depth discussion of mental illness to reveal enlightenment about the nature of the disease, and finally came up with the rationalization of mental illness.
