Chronicles of the Late Qing: The Empire in Ruins

The skies over the late Qing are thick with crimson clouds, and the empire is battered by wind and rain. The ancient dynasty suffers and stumbles through a world in turmoil. Empress Dowager Cixi stages a coup and imprisons the Guangxu Emperor; Kang Youwei and Liang Qichao flee abroad; the Boxers sweep through the north; and Western powers compete for their interests in China. All sides are locked in a life-or-death struggle. With concise, vivid prose and detailed, accurate historical sources, the novel recreates the upheavals of the late Qing from 1898 to 1900, spanning thirteen tumultuous years. It depicts the crumbling empire on the verge of collapse and portrays the plight of senior officials and intellectuals as they struggle to mend the heavens but find themselves unequal to the task. It plunges deep into the searing pain of a nation striving to save itself amid internal strife and foreign aggression.

The writer Li Keding is committed to entering the heart of history. In this novel, he puts himself in the shoes of those caught in the storm of late Qing politics, while also taking a modern perspective to calmly examine how the bureaucratic machinery operated under a system of autocracy that had lasted for a thousand years. He empathizes with the confusion and upheaval of the transition from old to new, yet wields his pen like a surgeon’s scalpel, incisive and precise, striking directly at the pain, every cut drawing blood.

Some critics consider this an expansive historical novel that prizes objectivity and accuracy, rejects embellishment, and embodies a scientific spirit. In a sense, the book can be read as “near-authentic history”.
