The origin of physiognomy is inseparable from the social background and philosophical theories of ancient society. The confluence of the two major theories of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements formed the framework of traditional Chinese thinking and is widely used in various fields. Since ancient people's understanding of the nature of things came from classical philosophy, they began to explore and seek knowledge from the theoretical system of Yin and Yang and the Five Elements about the reasons for people's "blessings and misfortunes, wealth and poverty". People often say that a melon's quality, badness, rawness, ripeness, bitterness, and sweetness can be determined by its shape and color; a horse's strength, speed, or slowness can be determined by looking at whether its various parts are uniform, its coat color, expression, and breath, and you can know whether it is a good horse or a coward. The same is true for people. Their "destiny" is inseparable from their "appearance" and "complexion". "Appearance" refers to the appearance, posture, and characteristics of an object or person; "complexion" refers to the appearance and demeanor of an object or person. This is determined by certain factors before a person is born. There are both fixed factors and variables. A person's destiny is affected by both innate and acquired factors. Things develop with variables, and a person's appearance also changes with the time and space after birth, and information is revealed on the body surface. Therefore, one's "fate" and "good and bad luck" can be inferred from a person's physical condition, facial features, complexion, etc.
