As the sequel to "The Shining", "Doctor Sleep" is Stephen King's strong return to the thriller route.
As an adult, Danny Torrence was deeply affected by the extrasensory precognition power "The Shining" and was in a state of mental stress for a long time. In order to get rid of the pain, he indulged in alcohol and drank all day long like his father Jack. After witnessing his father's schizophrenia and eventual death due to alcoholism at a young age, Danny finally made up his mind to join AA. While his alcohol addiction was under control, his "Shine" power, which had been suppressed by alcohol for a long time, was also released again. He works in a hospital, and together with a cat that can predict a person's death, he uses his special ability to comfort dying patients, and is known as the "Sleeping Doctor". He met Abra, a little girl who also had the power of "The Shining". Abra is being tracked by the True Knot, a mysterious organization that relies on absorbing the spiritual energy of dying people to survive. Danny's imminent mission is to rescue this little girl who shares the same fate with him...

I prefer this sequel to The Shining. There are not so many horrific scenes and fragmented descriptions, but more about telling the story of a family in a high-pitched or low-pitched style of writing. We watched Dan grow up, especially the fact that he drifted away from Halloran due to alcoholism, and even learned the news long after the other's death (the most real and saddest thing in the whole book). The villains are flesh and blood, humans and they are just creatures with different needs. Everyone is working hard for their own goals and paying attention to the people and things they care about. In the end, Abra and Dan had a spiritual connection, and Dan helped Abra through the ups and downs on her growth journey, which made me see again that she was only fifteen years old - this is something I had always ignored when reading this article.
In fact, after reading the whole work, I was a little disappointed.
There are far fewer bizarre scenes in this sequel than in the first "The Shining", and the sense of contradiction and impact that was described in my heart has also been reduced a lot. But the special writing style greatly increases the realism of reading. Many times I feel that I am not reading a novel, but a movie with complete sounds and colors.
What I'm disappointed about is that it lost a lot of its literary quality, and I personally feel that the final boss battle ended in a very short space of time. The early description of Rose is: Don't make trouble with her, otherwise she will eat you alive. The ending is that the little girl Abira transformed into a spirit remotely through Dan, a humanoid terminal, and wiped out the Zhenyue clan with almost no injuries. When I saw the ending, I really thought that Roth would have some secret weapon that would make a shocking turn.
So this story mainly talks about Dan's growth diary, how to get rid of the shadow of childhood, and Abira's youth training manual.
Although he is troubled by the power of "The Shining", he strives to overcome his fear and help those who are dying. Moreover, the cat in the book who can predict a person's death is also very interesting! I think the plot of this book is very exciting, and I especially like the part where Danny and the little girl Abra fight against the mysterious organization. Overall, "The Sleeping Doctor" is a wonderful novel that I recommend everyone to read!
