"Shishuoxinyu" is a notebook novel that records anecdotes of the metaphysical talks of scholar-bureaucrats in the Wei and Jin Dynasties. It can be seen from the novel that talking about metaphysics became a fashion during the Wei and Jin Dynasties, and metaphysics was based on the Taoist thoughts of Lao and Zhuang. Taoist thoughts had an important impact on the thinking styles and living conditions of the scholars in the Wei and Jin Dynasties, and even the entire social atmosphere. It was compiled by a group of literati organized by Liu Yiqing (403-444), Linchuan King of the Liu Song Dynasty in the Southern and Northern Dynasties, and annotated by Liu Jun of the Liang Dynasty. The original eight volumes of the book are divided into ten volumes with Liu Jun's annotation. The current version is divided into three volumes, divided into thirty-six categories such as virtue, speech, political affairs, literature, founder, and magnanimity. There are more than a thousand chapters in the book, which record anecdotes about celebrities and nobles from the late Han Dynasty to the Liu Song Dynasty. They are mainly stories about character comments, abstruse talk, and witty responses.
Reader comments
This book is very interesting! It is like a story gathering of celebrities from the Wei and Jin Dynasties. Each story is short and concise, but it can make people feel the unique grace and wisdom of that era. I think it is a bit like "Strange Stories from a Chinese Studio", both showing human nature and social features through stories. Moreover, the characters in the book have different personalities, some are elegant, some are bold, which made me feel like I was seeing vivid characters in front of me.
Very good book
It's full of fun, it's okay to watch it together with the Three Kingdoms
