This seemingly tragic story actually reveals a brave and optimistic spirit and inspires human fighting spirit. Moreover, the gentleness, broadness, and philanthropic mind shown by the "old man" in the story after he went to sea are qualities that were not seen in Hemingway's novels in the past. "The Old Man and the Sea" caused a huge sensation after its publication. Hemingway won the 54th Nobel Prize for Literature for this work.
