A Lifetime Spent Escaping the Besieged City

A woman spends her life escaping the “besieged city” of marriage, family, social expectations, and gender oppression. Yet with every escape, she encounters more complicated ties and a truer version of herself.

The opening “sweet and bloody night,” when Wu Ailan runs barefoot from Liutiaogou, strikes the heart like a hammer: “That sweet, bloody smell came half from the aching fullness of the breasts in her arms, and half from her husband Li Daniu’s hands, stained with pig’s blood and the reek of alcohol.” This deeply symbolic beginning plunges us into a world so real it takes your breath away.

The brilliance of the story lies in how it portrays not only violence, but also how a soul holds on to its last shred of clarity beneath it. Wu Ailan’s gesture of shielding her breasts is her final act of dignity as a mother, though she does not succeed. Even the most humble soil can bring forth the most vigorous life; even the coldest winter holds the promise of the spring to come.

Wang Jianjun’s arrival is like a ray of light, but not a dazzling one. He is a man with his own wounds: heartbroken, a heavy drinker, and vulnerable in the way of an intellectual. Their meeting is no fairy tale of a prince rescuing a princess, but a moment of recognition between two broken souls.

Most moving of all, love is not presented as the whole of salvation. Wu Ailan insists on learning to read by herself, opening her own flower shop, and facing Li Daniu’s threats on her own. When she says, “I’ll do it myself,” we see what true independence means for a woman: not leaving one man for another, but learning to stand on her own in the world.
