An eternal lamp is a light placed beneath a coffin after someone dies. This custom is practiced in many places. It is said to guide the dead to the underworld, where they can be reincarnated. It's called an eternal lamp because it must never go out before the funeral procession departs. Otherwise, the deceased will lose their way and become a wandering spirit.
