A yin-yang master is destined to deal with ghosts. Strange things have happened in the countryside since ancient times, and the deep mountains are full of spirits. Since I was little, Grandpa always told me that my fate was unusual, and that I was destined to deal with the dead and make my living from them. He said it would build up some good karma for me and help me live longer. But I never believed him. I thought he was just trying to scare me into behaving. Decades later, Grandpa mysteriously disappeared, and some spirits who had long since become restless ghosts began haunting me…
Main Characters:
Shao Lei: The male lead. After graduating from a third-rate university, he gets a job at a company. He has had an unlucky fate since childhood. After quitting and returning home, he takes over the ancestral incense shop, where his grandfather had continued the family tradition. Shao Lei has never believed in the existence of ghosts or gods. But after experiencing a series of bizarre events, he gradually comes to accept them. He begins learning the techniques of a yin-yang master from his grandfather. He has yin-yang eyes, which let him see ghosts, gods, and other unclean things.
Shao Fan: Shao Lei’s grandfather, a yin-yang master who inherited the family incense shop. He has experienced many strange people and events throughout his life. The yin-yang masters are a branch of the Maoshan sect. He had hoped to retire from the profession for good, but after his grandson got entangled with a ghost, he had no choice but to return to his old trade. His grandson is destined to deal with ghosts and gods, whether he likes it or not.
Xiu Min: A hanging ghost. She was bought from another town by Liu Jiu of Sanjiao Village to be the ghost bride of his son, Liu Ernui. Unable to accept her fate, Xiu Min hanged herself from the rafters of Liu Ernui’s new house on the day of his burial. Shao Lei can see her. He saw her on the first night after her death and, out of kindness, wanted to help her escape, not realizing she was already dead.
Boss Luo: A wealthy businessman whose mother has died. After making inquiries, he finds the incense shop and begs its owner to give his mother a peaceful burial. But Boss Luo has done too many shameful things in his life, and the people who died at his hands come to take revenge. In the end, Shao Lei helps resolve the matter, and the spirits let go of their grudges.
The story begins when Shao Lei, after struggling for years in the city, has little to show for it. After graduating from a third-rate university, he gets a junior job at a company. He works there for years, always following the rules, but can’t stand his boss’s practice of selling counterfeit goods, cheating customers, and skimming employees’ pay. He gets into a huge argument with his boss and, as expected, is fired. With no income, he decides to return to his hometown and try to make a living there.
After the incident with Xiu Min, Grandpa asks him to work at the incense shop and learn some yin-yang master techniques along the way. Shao Lei has been prone to attracting ghosts since childhood.
At the climax, Shao Lei accidentally causes Grandpa’s death through his own ignorance. Grief-stricken, he pulls himself together and puts the incense shop back in order.
In the end, Shao Lei dies at the hands of the ghost of the person he trusted most.
