In the Hakka mountain region, the Xie clan prospered under the leadership of the respected elder and clan chief Xie Motan and the family retainer Xie Mohe, who were actually brothers. They reclaimed farmland, built irrigation works, taught the clan to grow rice, made paper in the mountains, and transported it overland to trade in Nanxiong County, then a major commercial center. They also felled trees and sent the timber downriver to trade at the commercial wharf in Shaozhou on the Zhen River. Leading the clan militia, they took advantage of their fortified tower houses to fend off bandits and uphold the clan’s values. They donated money to support the war of resistance and led their people to escape the ravages of the Japanese invaders.
Xie Mohe’s eldest son, Xie Deren, nicknamed Dago, had been a handful since childhood, constantly getting into trouble. He dropped out of school after fighting with children from other clans. As an adult, he sparked another clan feud, and clan chief Xie Motan punished him according to family law. From then on, the bitterness between the two men only grew. On a trip to soak in the hot springs at Nuanshui Village, Dago met the bandit Deng Tiaoshan. After accidentally killing a policeman, he was forced into the mountains and became second-in-command of Huangshitou Stockade. At the urging of his younger brother Xie Deyi, nicknamed Ergou, he rescued a Red Army soldier wounded during the Long March and left behind by his unit. During a robbery, he also met his dream woman, Yan Runyu, an underground Party member. Influenced by her, he began actively drawing closer to the underground Party. After victory in the War of Resistance, Huangshitou Stockade’s strategic location led to its division: half of its men followed Dago and accepted amnesty, becoming security police in Quannan County, Jiangxi, while the other half followed Deng Tiaoshan and accepted amnesty in Shixing County, Guangdong. The two groups met very different fates.
Dago kept a low profile with his men and bought a large stock of guns and ammunition left behind by the Japanese for our army. Deng Tiaoshan’s men, however, ended up behind bars. While they were being transferred to Quannan for detention, a guerrilla unit came to free them. Deng Tiaoshan was shot and died from blood loss. Dago’s men became our army’s inside allies and helped the People’s Liberation Army successfully capture the city. But while they were fighting in Guangdong, they fell into an enemy ambush. The brothers Dago had brought down from Huangshitou were killed or wounded, dealing him a devastating blow.
