The Legend of White Snake

Legend has it that during the Shaoxing period of the Southern Song Dynasty, a snake demon who had been cultivating for a thousand years transformed into a beautiful woman named Bai Suzhen. He and his maid Qingqing met Xu Xuan, the king of drugstores, in the West Lake of Hangzhou. Then they became husband and wife. After marriage, she experienced many ups and downs, and White Snake often behaved strangely, which made Xu feel embarrassed. Fahai, an eminent monk from Jinshan Temple in Zhenjiang, gave Xu an alms bowl to cover his wife. Behind the white and green quilts, the original forms are revealed, which are white snakes and herrings that have been enlightened for thousands of years. Fahai then took the alms bowl and placed it in front of the Lei Temple Peak, and had people build a seven-level pagoda on top of it, which was named Lei Peak. The white and green pagodas were permanently restrained in the pagoda.
